Inverness Museum collects arms and armour that reflects Highland dress, the Highland's military history, the battles and warfare that Highlanders have been part of both at home and abroad, and those conflicts that took place in our region - the most significant of these being the Battle of Culloden in 1746.  This category also includes items relating to wars and warfare, such as both World Wars and the Cold War.  Some of the weapons collection represents leisure activities, such as rifles used for field sports, or hunting and poaching for food, such as animal traps.

The weapons collection includes:

  • edged weapons e.g. basket-hilted swords, dirks, sgian dubhs
  • firearms e.g. Doon pistols, muskets, sporting rifles
  • shields and armour e.g. targes, chain mail
  • weapon accessories e.g. gun flints, powder horns and flasks
  • warfare e.g. Raigmore Bunker Collection
  • traps

This category obviously includes some of the most dangerous items in the collection.  The museum follows strict health and safety policies in looking after these items, to ensure the safety of staff and the public at all times.  IMAG holds a firearms licence, in line with legal requirements.
