Numismatics is a term used for all things money, as well as medals because they are made in a very similar way to coins.  This category includes:

  • Coins and tokens e.g. ancient hammered coins, communion tokens
  • Banknotes and cards e.g. credit cards
  • Foreign currency
  • Medals and medallions e.g. military medals, prizes, civic awards
  • Paranumismatics (anything related to money that isn't coins or banknotes)
  • Stamps

Paranumismatics covers a wide range of objects, from piggy banks to ticket machines, shop tills to shares certificates, insurance plaques to phone cards.

This category is one of the few areas of the collection that branches out beyond the Highlands, as it includes communion tokens from all over Scotland, and coins from distant lands and ancient empires.
