Archival material mostly relates to items of paper or similar material.  The collections at IMAG include:

  • maps and plans e.g. Ordinance Survey maps, hand-drawn maps, architectural plans
  • documents e.g. medieval charters, Jacobite letters, certificates, manuscripts
  • printed material e.g. theatre programmes, tickets, brochures, sheet music
  • family archives e.g. Inglis Papers, Kennedy Papers
  • photographic collections e.g. M.E.M. Donaldson collection, Joseph Cook Collection
  • postcards from places around the Highlands
  • books e.g. Gaelic bibles, tartan sample books, folios

The archives held at the museum often relate to other Highland material that we hold e.g. Jacobite collection, Alexander Grant fiddle and fishing collection, or tartan history.  Other items record the history, including recent history, of Inverness.
