High Life Highland (HLH) is a charity registered in Scotland and a company, Limited by Guarantee, wholly owned by The Highland Council (THC), whose purpose is to develop and promote affordable access to health and wellbeing, learning, and culture for everyone in the Highlands. The Charity was established on 1 October 2011 to deliver a suite of Community Learning and Leisure Services on behalf of THC across the Highlands.
The Charity’s purpose is to focus on making life better for residents and visitors in the Highlands.
The main business of HLH is the delivery of a Service Delivery Contract (SDC) for The Highland Council across the Charity’s eight areas of work:
- Archives - collecting, conserving and making accessible records which reflect the history and diversity of the Scottish Highlands.
- Countryside Rangers - connecting people with the nature, wildlife, and heritage of the Scottish Highlands through activities, interpretation, events and community projects.
- Community Venues & Engagement - manages and operates community facilities across the Highlands, including centres, town halls, visitor attractions, playparks, pitches, and fields, as well as major venues such as the refurbished Northern Meeting Park and Bught Park in Inverness.
- Leisure Facilities - providing local, specialist venues, staff and activities to promote sport, leisure and learning. We operate 25 leisure centres with gyms, fitness classes, children's activities, wellbeing offerings and in some locations, swimming pools.
- Libraries - providing reading and digital services to support educational, cultural and recreational needs. We operate 44 public libraries, some are standalone libraries, while others operate as part of a community centre or school. We also operate a mobile library service.
- Museums and Visitor Attractions - our museums and visitor attractions, including The Inverness Castle Experience, conserve, interpret and celebrate Highland life and heritage. Our galleries offer a wide range of permanent and temporary exhibitions from visual art to contemporary craft.
- Music Tuition - enabling learners across Highland to access formal tuition on a range of orchestral; folk & pop/rock instruments and to participate in group and individual performances.
- Sport & Physical Activity - The aim of the sports service is to increase the number of people taking part in sport and physical activity and to promote progression to club and performance sport.
