Why learn a musical instrument?

Learning an instrument can support your child’s wider education and personal development.

Benefits include:

  • Improved health and wellbeing
  • Better discipline and organisational skills
  • Increased confidence and self-belief
  • A strong sense of achievement
  • Valuable skills for life
  • Enjoyment and creativity

Playing and performing music as part of a group also helps develop important social skills and the ability to work well with others. There are a vast number of ensemble opportunities available at school, Area & Regional level once a pupil is at the appropriate ability level - instructors will advise.

How places are allocated

If there are several pupils interested in learning, the instructor may initially work with them as a group before deciding on suitability for specific instruments. In some cases, simple aptitude assessments may be used, particularly where instrument availability is limited.

Primary school provision

In primary schools, the year group at which pupils can start lessons varies by school and instrument. Most vacancies are typically available from P4 onwards. If your application is unsuccessful due to age or availability, you are encouraged to reapply at a later stage. Most Instructors operate waiting lists.

Supporting your child’s learning

Parental and family support is essential at all stages of learning an instrument.

This might include:

  • Providing a suitable time and space to practise at home
  • Encouraging regular practice
  • Attending performances where possible

If you have questions about tuition or your child’s progress, please contact the school to request a discussion with the instructor.
