Archaeology collections at IMAG include:

  • assemblages - material that has been excavated and analysed by professional archaeologists
  • small finds - items found by field-walkers and metal-detectorists
  • lithics (stone items) e.g. flint arrowheads, carved stone balls, polished stone axeheads
  • metalwork e.g. bronze axeheads, iron nails, gold jewellery, lead musket balls
  • pottery e.g. Bronze Age beakers, grass-tempered pot sherds, medieval jugs

Archaeological finds and assemblages in Scotland have to be declared to Treasure Trove.  As an Accredited Museum, IMAG can be allocated finds, although these usually require a finder's fee, and assemblages.  This is the only way to legally and responsibly collect archaeology in Scotland.

To find out more about Treasure Trove, visit their website or attend one of their roadshow events.
