The collections at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery are a resource for inspiration, learning and enjoyment for all. Academic enquiries are always welcome, but you don't have to be working towards a qualification or publication to explore the collections. Whether you are discovering your family’s Highland roots or simply want to indulge your passion for a particular subject, you are welcome to get in touch to book a research visit.
As with the majority of museums, it is not possible nor good practice, to display everything. A research visit will allow you to explore the collections in more depth and see items currently held in store. Our considerable collections cover a diverse range of subjects, from art to natural sciences, coins to textiles. Find out more about what we collect on our Collection categories page.
We also have a small reference library of publications relating to local history and specialist books on many of the subjects within the collection. These can be viewed by appointment.
The Collections Team are happy to deal with enquiries from individuals and institutions alike. Please Contact us with your proposed topic of research so we can advise on what relevant material we have and appointments available. Please note fees may be applicable for research visits which require significant staff time to facilitate (you will be advised of this prior to booking).
