The Highland Archive Service holds thousands of privately deposited collections which include letters, photographs, family trees, maps, scrapbooks, diaries, artwork and much more. They have been deposited with the Highland Archive Service by individuals, families, businesses and societies to ensure their safekeeping and preservation for future generations.
Date and location coverage
All four of our archive centres hold privately deposited collections of various dates, from estate papers from the 13th century through to social club minutes from the 21st century.
What can these records be used for?
The deposited collections provide insight into many aspects of Highland life. Among the business and industry collections are the records of Rose Street Foundry/AI Welders and Wick Harbour Trust. Society collections include the records of Inverness Scientific Society and Field Club. Large estate collections include Waternish, Cameron of Lochiel and Munro of Novar. We also hold the archives for the Highland Health Board, Caledonian Canal and Northern Constabulary.
Access and restrictions
When collections are deposited with us the depositor is able to specify restrictions in the deposit agreement. Staff will be able to advise when this is the case.
Copies and photography
As above, this will depend on the terms of the deposit agreement. Staff will be able to advise in each instance. Charges may apply.
