What is wellness week?

Most of us have a version of “better” in mind — a bit calmer, a bit fitter, a bit more connected — and most of us are waiting for the right moment to start. From 21–27 September, High Life Highland's Wellness Week opens the door to dozens of activities across the Highlands, all free to try with your 7-Day Membership trial. Whether it's a class you've been meaning to try, a quiet corner of the library, or a walk with the Countryside Rangers, this guide will help you find your way in.

Three ways to make life a little better this week

Move, at whatever pace suits you

Exercise is one of the fastest ways to lift your mood, and this wellness week there's a class for every level of “never tried it before.” Push yourself with HYROX — a high-energy, full-body class blending running with functional moves like sled pushes and rowing. It's scalable to any fitness level, so beginners and seasoned gym-goers alike can build strength and stamina together.

Prefer something calmer? Yoga is a mindful practice combining postures, breathwork and meditation to build strength and flexibility while easing stress and improving sleep — suitable for all levels, with time carved out just for you.

Or clear your head with Indoor Cycling — a high-energy spin class set to music, with climbs, sprints and intervals to build cardiovascular fitness and release stress. A powerful, low-impact way to work up a sweat.

All three — and every other fitness class on the timetable — are included free with your 7-Day membership trial. Browse all fitness classes.

Give your mind a break

Sometimes making life better means slowing down, not speeding up. Drop into the Archive Afternoon: Health & Wellbeing Through the Archives — a health and wellbeing themed archive display and open afternoon with refreshments and social connection opportunities. No need to book, just drop in. Wed 23 Sept, 14:00–16:00, Nucleus, The Nuclear and Caithness Archives, Wick.

Can't get there in person? Learn with Lorna Live brings accessible learning straight to you, online via Facebook. Thu 24 Sept, 11:00–11:30.

Or step outside after dark for a Bat Walk with your local Countryside Ranger — join Ranger Saranne in search of her favourite mammal. Bats are much maligned but truly fascinating, and you'll investigate their unusual ecology while walking through the park to the River Nairn. A quiet, wonder-filled way to switch off after dark. Fri 25 Sept — donations welcome (suggested £5–£10 per person) to support the Rangers' education and conservation work.

Do something together

Some of the best wellbeing comes from simply sharing a moment with someone else. Bookbug sessions are filled with songs, rhymes, stories and smiles — designed for babies, toddlers and their grown-ups, a wonderful way to bond and enjoy quality time together in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Free, drop in — running at various libraries across the Highlands this week, so check your local library for times.

Older kids not left out — Lego Club sessions are running at libraries across the region this week, a free and easy way for children to build, play and make friends.
