Celebrating Caithness Glass
Six beautiful glass paperweights produced in Wick by Caithness Glass. One of them is from a line of paperweights specifically designed to commemorate the shutdown of the Prototype Fast Reactor at Dounreay in 1994. Another is dedicated to the UKAEA, the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority.
A legacy of craftsmanship
Caithness Glass was founded in 1961, its first production facility operating in Wick. Their high-quality glass products would earn them a Royal Warrant as a recognised supplier of glass to the Queen Mother. 1969 saw the opening of a new facility in Oban, and another opened in Perth in 1979. Eventually the headquarters of Caithness Glass were relocated to Perth, followed by the closure of the original Wick production facility.
The importance of glass
Obviously, glass has many, many more applications other than serving as a decorative paperweight. To name just one, without glass it is likely that nobody would be able to view posts like this one in the first place.
In recognition of the many contributions glass has made to the advancement of civilisation and to promote further growth in the usage and study of glass, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 2022 as the International Year of Glass.
