Baby swimming guidelines

A caregiver in a swimming pool supports a small child as they face one another, with both partially immersed in the water.

Introducing your baby to swimming can be a fun and rewarding experience, helping them build confidence in the water while supporting their physical and emotional development. However, babies are more sensitive to temperature and fatigue, so it’s important to follow a few simple guidelines to keep them safe and comfortable.

The Scottish Amateur Swimming Association recommends starting swimming from around 6 months old. If you're unsure, speak to your health visitor or GP for advice.

Tips for swimming with babies and young children

  • Limit time in the water: Babies lose heat faster than adults. We recommend sessions of 20–30 minutes maximum.
  • Keep moving: Staying active in the water helps babies stay warm.
  • Stay submerged to shoulder level: If your baby is out of the water, they’ll cool down quickly. A full-body swimsuit can help retain warmth.
  • Consider a neoprene swimsuit: These are especially helpful for babies who are more sensitive to the cold.
  • Use a swim nappy: These are essential for hygiene and comfort.
