More than 150 pupils from P4–7 came together across two lively days in Portree and Plockton to take part in a vibrant Sport Fèis, delivered by High Life Highland’s Active Schools team as part of this year’s Seachdain na Gàidhlig (World Gaelic Week) celebrations.
Delivered in partnership with the Highland Council Gaelic Team, the events offered pupils the chance to enjoy sport through the medium of Gaelic – promoting physical activity, confidence and cultural pride in equal measure.
A packed programme of activities
Throughout the fèis, pupils had the chance to try an impressive variety of sports and activities, including:
- Curling
- Boccia
- Fitness sessions
- Basketball
- Indoor golf
- Rugby
- Football
The atmosphere was energetic, inclusive, and filled with curiosity as pupils challenged themselves to try new sports, build skills, and support one another in a fun, friendly setting.
We are so grateful to our young leaders supporting the activities, who were great role models on the day.

Young Leaders take centre stage
One of the standout elements of the event was the exceptional leadership shown by local young people.
High school pupils from Plockton High School and Portree High School led sessions throughout both days, acting as positive role models for the younger participants. They were joined by P7 Junior Leaders from Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh, who delivered excellent curling sessions entirely through Gaelic – showcasing not only their sporting skills but also their commitment to leadership and language use.
Making sport accessible for all
The two-day Sport Fèis was hailed as a resounding success, with pupils expressing great enthusiasm and enjoyment. Crucial support from the Highland Council Gaelic Team, through funding and help with transport, ensured that pupils from across the area were able to attend.
Active Schools Co-ordinator Sarah Ross said: “Following on from the success of our P1–3 event last year, it was great to offer the same opportunity to our P4–7 pupils this year, giving them more sport-specific activities. We are so grateful to our young leaders supporting the activities, who were great role models on the day. Also, a big thanks to the Highland Council Gaelic Team for supporting this activity again this year.”
