The Inverness - Augsburg Sporting Alliance brings together young people, coaches and volunteers to share knowledge, develop skills and build lasting relationships through sport. The initiative is led by The Highland Council in partnership with High Life Highland, sportscotland, local clubs and governing bodies, alongside the Augsburg District Branch of the Bavarian Youth Sports Association. The exchange formed part of the 2026 celebrations marking 70 years of town twinning between Inverness and Augsburg, a partnership established in 1956 to promote friendship, cultural understanding and long-term social and economic links.
There are some trips that leave you with a collection of good memories, and then there are those that genuinely broaden your perspective. Our 2026 town twinning exchange from Inverness to Augsburg was undoubtedly the latter.
Community Sports Hub Office, High Life Highland
Over the course of a week, participants from across the Highlands travelled to the historic Bavarian city of Augsburg to take part in a packed programme of learning, cultural exchange, community engagement and sport. What followed was an unforgettable experience that demonstrated the power of international partnerships and the unique ability of sport to bring people together, regardless of language, background, or nationality.
Hugo shares his reflections on a truly transformative twinning exchange…
From coach education and inclusion workshops to rugby sessions, cycling tours, and cultural visits, the week offered something for everyone while creating connections that will last long after our return home. One of the most rewarding aspects of the exchange was the opportunity to learn from different approaches to sport development and coaching.
Throughout the week, participants engaged with local organisations and coaches, gaining valuable insight into how sport is delivered and supported within Germany. While there are many similarities between our sporting systems, there were also fascinating differences that prompted reflection and discussion.
Particular attention was given to coaching practice and leadership, exploring topics such as:
- Managing challenging conversations within teams and clubs
- Creating positive and supportive coaching environments
- Planning and delivering progressive training sessions
- Encouraging volunteer development and club sustainability
These sessions provided plenty of food for thought, and many of us left with practical ideas that could be adapted and implemented back home.
A real highlight was the inclusion training delivered by the Bayerische Sportjugend (BSJ). Rather than viewing inclusion as a stand-alone topic, the workshop encouraged participants to consider how inclusivity should sit at the heart of everything we do in sport. We explored the barriers that individuals can face when accessing sport and discussed ways to make clubs and activities more welcoming, representative, and accessible. The session was thought-provoking and inspiring, reinforcing the belief that sport is at its best when everyone feels they belong.
An Active Week of Sporting Experiences
It would hardly be a sports exchange without plenty of opportunities to get active, and Augsburg certainly delivered. Over the week, we were introduced to a range of sports and activities, many of which were completely new experiences for us.
Among the highlights were:
- Artistic Cycling, an incredible display of balance, coordination, and precision performed entirely on specially adapted bicycles.
- Vaulting, often described as gymnastics on horseback, requiring athleticism, trust, and teamwork.
- Self-defence workshops, which provided practical skills while building confidence and awareness.
- Kettlebell and calisthenics sessions, testing participants' strength, endurance, and determination.
For many, these activities offered the chance to step outside their comfort zones! One of my personal highlights was the opportunity to coach and participate in a rugby session with Augsburg RFC. Rugby has a remarkable way of connecting people, and despite different languages and backgrounds, the shared understanding of the game quickly created a sense of camaraderie. Being able to exchange coaching ideas, join in training, and spend time with players at the club was a fantastic experience.
Elsewhere, participants embraced a variety of additional sporting opportunities through friendships made during the week including ice hockey and American football sessions. It was a brilliant example of how these exchanges often create opportunities that aren't listed on any itinerary but end up becoming some of the most memorable moments.
Discovering Augsburg on Two Wheels
One of the simplest yet most enjoyable aspects of the trip was travelling around the city by bike.
Augsburg's excellent cycling infrastructure made it easy to explore. Rather than moving from venue to venue in buses, the group became immersed in the daily rhythm of local life, travelling through parks, historic streets, and alongside waterways that are central to the city's identity.
Cycling gave us the freedom to discover many of Augsburg's most significant landmarks and cultural attractions, including the Augsburger Puppenkiste, one of Germany's most famous puppet theatres; The Fuggerei, founded in 1521, and considered the world's oldest social housing complex still in use today; and the FC Augsburg Stadium, a key highlight for the football fans in the group given the World Cup was underway!
Food, Hospitality and Shared Experiences
One thing that quickly became apparent was the warmth and hospitality shown by our hosts throughout the week. As with any cultural exchange, food became a central part of bringing people together and provided a natural opportunity for conversation and connection. Some of the best conversations of the week took place around those dinner tables!
Celebrating International Friendship
A particularly special moment came during a civic reception held at the magnificent Schaezlerpalais. The event brought together representatives from both communities and highlighted the enduring value of the town twinning relationship between Inverness and Augsburg.
In an era where international understanding and cooperation are increasingly important, the reception served as a reminder of why these partnerships matter. They create opportunities for people to share experiences, challenge assumptions, and build meaningful relationships that extend beyond borders.
Ending on a High
The week concluded with a visit to the vibrant Augsburger Sommernächte festival. The streets were alive with music, food, entertainment, and celebration, creating the perfect backdrop for reflecting on everything the group had experienced. We had a packed seven days, formed new friendships, developed our skills and broadened our perspectives.
The Inverness to Augsburg exchange was about far more than travel – it demonstrated how sport can create those meaningful connections and how communities can learn from one another to become stronger and more inclusive.
As we returned home we brought back much more than photographs and souvenirs. We returned with new ideas, stronger partnerships, renewed motivation, and a greater appreciation for the role that sport and community play in connecting people across the world.
Most importantly, we returned knowing that this was not the end of the journey, but simply the next chapter in the growing relationship between Inverness and Augsburg.
