What will you see when you visit Inverness Museum and Art Gallery?

Museum galleries

IMAG has two large museum galleries that take you on a journey through history by following a simple timeline, from prehistoric ages to modern day.

On the ground floor, explore:

  • How the Highland landscape was formed
  • Bronze Age and Iron Age treasures
  • The Picts and their beautifully carved stones
  • Medieval Inverness and its global connections
  • The importance of Gaelic culture and language
  • Animals and their natural habitats

Up on the first floor, the story continues with:

  • The Jacobites and Bonnie Prince Charlie
  • Highland music, culture and costume
  • Stunning Inverness silver
  • The growth of the modern city

Along the way, you’ll find plenty of hands‑on activities – piece together a Bronze Age pot, wear an Iron Age armlet, try medieval games, practise a few Gaelic words, or even try wrapping yourself in a traditional kilt.  To find out more about the collections, visit the museum collection page

Art galleries

IMAG features three art gallery spaces hosting a changing programme of exhibitions. Displays range from contemporary craft and fine art to touring national exhibitions.  Local artists and craftmakers are showcased, alongside artists from across Scotland and beyond.  You can see what’s currently on display by visiting our What’s on page.

Community Gallery

Our Community Gallery in our entrance foyer, gives local groups and creative projects a platform to share their work.  Visit the What’s on page to discover what’s currently on display.

Photographic collections

The museum holds a large photographic collection, including the Highland Photographic Archive, of more than 200,000 negatives and prints.  These images document life across the Highlands, with a particularly rich collection from Inverness and the surrounding area.  Our Photography Corner often features a small selection on display.  Find out more about the photographic collections here
