About us

A museum interior with text panels on the wall and a glass cabinet of objects

Discover the unique history and culture of Inverness and the Scottish Highlands at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery (IMAG). Located in the heart of the city, the museum invites you to explore a rich collection of artefacts, art and stories that reflect Highland life, heritage and creativity.

Who we are

Inverness Museum and Art Gallery is managed by High Life Highland on behalf of The Highland Council.  The collections and the museum building are owned by The Highland Council.  IMAG is an Accredited Museum with professionally qualified staff.  We are also a Quality Scheme member of the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions.

What we do

We look after the museum collections and photographic collections, which number over 300,000 items, and make them accessible to the public through displays, exhibitions, publications and engagement.  We manage and maintain the museum building so it can welcome thousands of visitors every year.

Along with the Highland Folk Museum and North Coast Visitor Centre, IMAG provides heritage and cultural services to residents and visitors in Inverness and across the Highland region.

Purpose

High Life Highland Museums connect people to collections and inspire everyone to discover what makes the Highlands special.
