The Highland Archive Service regularly runs archive and family history classes both in-person and online.

Archive classes

These classes are designed for people who are new to archive research and want to find out more about the work of the Archive Service.

Each week, you will be taken on a journey through the archives looking at records relating to:

  • Education
  • Property
  • Church
  • Poor relief
  • Crime
  • Estate records
  • Family and personal papers

Family history classes

Led by our expert Family Historians, our Family History for Beginners and Advanced Family History classes will help you trace your roots. You’ll get a brief introduction to archival records before exploring the core records essential for family history research, including:

  • Statutory Records
  • Census Records
  • Old Parish Registers
  • Wills
  • Memorial Inscriptions
  • Newspapers

Our sessions include real research examples, live demonstrations of online resources, and plenty of time to get your own questions answered.

Classes will be advertised on our Events page.
