Apply for tuition
We hope your child enjoys music lessons with us and makes the most of the opportunities available. Please read the following terms and conditions carefully before completing your application.
Frequency of lessons
Once your application is accepted, weekly lessons of 25–30 minutes will be delivered during school time. Most pupils start in a beginners’ group. Some instructors use a blended approach, combining face-to-face and online delivery via Google Meet.
We aim to keep tuition with the same instructor within the same Associated School Group (ASG), but this is not always geographically possible. Requests for a specific instructor when a pupil moves schools will be considered case by case but cannot be guaranteed.
Exceptions
Lessons do not take place during school holidays or when school activities prevent them. On in-service days or during severe weather closures, instructors may arrange online lessons to maintain continuity.
During study leave, instructors are available to teach as normal, and pupils should discuss arrangements directly. Occasionally, instructors will support pupils in concerts, shows, or assemblies instead of regular lessons. Participation in these activities is highly recommended for musical and personal development.
Costs involved
Instrumental tuition in Scottish schools is currently free of charge. However, you may need to purchase music books, accessories, or contribute to certain activities beyond the normal school day.
In most cases, we can provide an instrument on loan for as long as required. Please do not purchase an instrument before lessons start, as ownership does not guarantee a place on an instructor’s timetable.
Changing schools
We will make every effort to maintain continuity for pupils transferring schools, but this cannot be guaranteed.
Parental obligations
Learning an instrument takes time and commitment. We expect parents to support daily practice and encourage progress. Progress is logged through G Suite and our HLH Management System, and we welcome communication with instructors.
Once pupils are ready to join school, area, or regional ensembles (such as Highland Young Musicians), we ask parents to provide support for full participation—whether that means transport, attending concerts, or even joining a committee!
Please do not engage another teacher without consulting your child’s HLH instructor. This can cause confusion and hinder progress. At advanced stages, instructors may recommend additional specialist support for specific skills.
If lessons are discontinued, please cancel through the online portal and inform the instructor directly. Any loaned instrument or equipment must be returned promptly, or replacement costs will be invoiced.
Pupil requirements
We usually provide instruments on loan, and pupils are expected to look after them carefully. Families will need to purchase tutor books and, over time, accessories such as reeds, valve oil, or strings.
Enthusiasm is as important as ability! Instructors will build on your child’s commitment each week. Occasionally, if progress is not possible, instructors may recommend stopping tuition—but only after discussing options with parents.
