Summer reading challenge

The 2026 Summer Reading Challenge is Read to the Beat, delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with public libraries and powered by Universal Music Group UK. The theme inspires children to explore the connection between stories and songs, discovering how reading and music both ignite imagination and creativity. This year's Challenge is brought to life with illustrations by award-winning author and illustrator, Harry Woodgate,

Welcome to the Summer Reading Challenge! Take part online or at your local library.

The Summer Reading Challenge is a FREE holiday activity for children. It’s all about reading for fun, aiming to improve reading skills and confidence. Choose anything they enjoy to read! It’s free to take part and children can sign up at their local library or online.

The Reading Agency has partnered with Universal Music Group UK for Summer Reading Challenge 2026 'Read to the Beat!'. This inspiring collaboration will harness the universal appeal of music to inspire a new generation of readers in the UK.

There are two ways you can take part:

  • You can take part in person at your local library. The library will give you a special sticker poster and other special incentives, and help you find books to read for your Challenge.
  • Alternatively, take part online. Set a reading goal and log your books on your profile. When you reach your goal you will unlock a limited-edition online badge and certificate!

The in-person and online Challenges are separate. Physical incentives like medals are only available via the library, for those taking part in person.
