There's a very specific kind of dread that comes with walking into a fitness class for the first time — not knowing where to stand, whether you're wearing the wrong thing, or if everyone else already knows what they're doing. If that's what's been holding you back, this is for you. Here's exactly what to expect, step by step, so the only thing left to do is turn up. This Wellness Week, 21–27 September, there's no better time to try.

Why we put off our first class (and why that's completely normal)

Almost everyone who's ever walked into a class for the first time has felt some version of the same thing — worried about being the slowest, not knowing the moves, or feeling like everyone's watching. None of that is unique to you, and none of it is true in practice. Every regular in that room started exactly where you are now.

What to bring and wear

Nothing complicated — comfortable clothes you can move freely in, and trainers or appropriate footwear for the activity. If you're trying a mat-based class like yoga or Pilates, mats are available at all sites, so don't worry if you don't have your own — though you're welcome to bring one if you'd prefer. Bring a water bottle, and if you're planning a swim after class remember your swimwear and a towel. You'll need your highlife card or the app to check in, but beyond that, there's no kit list to worry about — and definitely no need for the latest activewear. Nobody's checking the labels.

What happens when you arrive

If you already have a highlife card, show it at reception. If you're using your free 7-day membership trial, you'll be given a membership number so you can book online or use our app — just check in at reception when you arrive. Head to the changing rooms, where you'll find lockers for your things, and reception will let you know where your class is being held. Aim to arrive a few minutes before it starts — not too early, as another class may still be finishing up in the same space. If it's your first time, say hello to the instructor and let them know — they'll make sure you know what to do and how to set up any equipment you might need, like a spin bike.

During the class: friendly faces, your own pace

Instructors are welcoming and used to first-timers — they'll happily talk you through anything as you go. The people around you are just as friendly; classes have a real sense of community, and it won't take long before you're chatting with the regulars like you've always been there. Go at whatever pace feels right for you — nobody is watching to judge, and every class is used to a mix of abilities in the room together.

Give yourself permission to be a beginner — you don't have to be good at it straight away.

Prefer to do your own thing?

If classes aren't your style, you're also welcome to use the gym and fitness suites for your own workout. These do require a quick induction first, so our team can show you around safely — just ask at reception and they'll get you booked in.

How you'll feel afterwards

Tired, probably. Maybe a little sore the next day. But most people leave their first class feeling proud they went, and looking forward to the next one. That's completely normal too.
