Our Active Schools team has been busy this summer, bringing two brilliant sporting events to primary school pupils right across Caithness. More than 150 young people took part in a World Cup-themed football festival and a netball tournament — and the energy and effort on show was something else.

A World Cup atmosphere on the pitch

The football festival for P6 and P7 pupils was held at Naver, timed perfectly to coincide with the build-up to the real World Cup. Because Scottish FA guidelines don't allow competitive trophy football for under-13s, our team came up with a creative solution — randomly assigning pupils to international teams to give the day a genuine World Cup feel.

More than 70 youngsters took part, and between them they scored an impressive 104 goals across the festival.

Netball skills on show at Mount Pleasant

The netball tournament for P5 to P7 pupils was held at Mount Pleasant School, with more than 80 participants competing across A and B team competitions. There was also a Rural Cup contested between Castletown and Halkirk Primary Schools — and the standard of play throughout was excellent.

Tournament results:

  • A Team winners: Miller Academy Primary
  • B Team winners: Castletown Primary
  • Rural Cup winners: Castletown Primary

Schools from across Caithness came together

Pupils from Castletown, Halkirk, Reay, Mount Pleasant, Miller Academy and Pennyland all took part across the two events — a real community effort, with schools putting in weeks of after-school practice in the lead-up.

Active Schools Coordinator Alyn Gunn praised everyone involved: "It was brilliant seeing over 150 youngsters participate in our two events this year. The schools have been practising after school for a number of weeks in the build-up to these events, and it was very clear to see that effort reflected in the excellent standard across both events.

"A massive thank you goes to all participating schools, as well as our football referees Bob Gunn, Michael Gray and Stevie Hughes and our netball umpires Emily King, Leelee Chan So, Shona Mackay and Summer Chan So."
