Group fitness classes – access for under 16s

High Life Highland is committed to providing inclusive, high-quality fitness programming. To ensure the safe and appropriate participation of young people in studio-based group fitness classes, we follow industry guidelines and best practice.

Age restrictions

  • Under 14s: Not permitted to attend group fitness classes under any circumstances.
  • 14–15-year-olds: May attend selected classes under the conditions outlined below.

Conditions for participation (14–15-year-olds)

Young people aged 14–15 may attend selected group fitness classes, provided the following conditions are met:

  • Participation is only permitted in classes deemed suitable for this age group, based on guidance from recognised industry bodies.
  • Gym instructors and personal trainers with qualifications recognised on the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) from 2009 onwards may adapt certain mainstream sessions to accommodate occasional participation.
  • All under-16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the class to ensure appropriate supervision and a safe, positive experience.
  • 14–15-year-olds are not permitted to take part in:
    • Exclusive weight-based classes (e.g. Body Pump)
    • Contact-based classes (e.g. Boxercise with contact)
