Around 90 primary 4 and 5 pupils from across East Sutherland enjoyed a day of fast-paced action, teamwork and fun at the East Sutherland Schools Sports Association (ESSSA) Benchball Competition held recently at Golspie High School.

Representing all eight schools in the area, 13 teams competed across girls’, boys’ and mixed categories in a series of exciting five-minute matches, showcasing impressive teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout the day.

Young leaders keep the game moving

The event was supported by seven dedicated Sports Leaders from Golspie High School, who refereed and scored games, helping the tournament run smoothly from start to finish.

Elissa Stevenson, Active Schools Co-ordinator, said: “This event is always a highlight of our sports calendar. The pupils arrive full of enthusiasm and give their all for their teams. It’s fantastic to see them developing new skills, making friends and enjoying being active in such a positive environment.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the volunteers, school staff and young leaders who help make the competition possible. Their support gives children the opportunity to experience team sport, build confidence and connect with pupils from other schools across the area.”

Cheering from the sidelines

A large crowd of parents, carers, school staff and siblings created a lively atmosphere throughout the day, cheering on the young competitors.

Trophies and medals

At the end of the competition, trophies were presented to the winning schools in the Small Schools, Big Schools and Mixed categories, while medals were awarded to first and second-place finishers. Councillor Richard Gale presented the trophies, assisted by the Sports Leaders.

The Benchball Competition is the second event in this year’s ESSSA programme and continues to play an important role in encouraging young people to get active, have fun and enjoy sport.
