Dounreay Exhibition

From the 1950s to the 1990s, Caithness played a pivotal role in nuclear energy development. Just ten miles west of Thurso, the Nuclear Power Development Establishment (NPDE) and Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment (NRTE) became world-leading facilities in reactor technology.

Dounreay housed three reactors - the Fast Reactor, Materials Testing Reactor, and Prototype Reactor - while Vulcan focused on submarine reactor testing. These sites attracted engineers from across the globe and positioned Caithness at the forefront of nuclear innovation.

Beyond its technological achievements, Dounreay transformed the local economy, bringing jobs and growth to the region. Today, while the reactors are decommissioned, their legacy remains.

Our exhibition offers a unique insight into this fascinating chapter of Caithness history, featuring objects from everyday life at Dounreay, parts of the reactors, and even the interior of a control room.

Visit the Dounreay Exhibition and discover Caithness’s nuclear heritage.
