A Fiaradh gu’n Iar: Veering Westerly

This exhibition contains new and retrospective work from Will Maclean, developed in association with Art First, London and An Lanntair, Stornoway. With powerful and lyrical work from the ‘artist laureate’ of the Highlands and Islands, comprises of drawings, constructions, assemblages, free standing sculptures, as well as the poetic collaboration with John Burnside, The Catechism of the Laws of Storms – a publication of poems written in response to Maclean’s collaged images. His metaphorical art is based on the histories and mythologies of those who live and work by the sea; and his deep interest in Highland culture reaches out to universal themes of navigation, emigration, whaling and fishing, and global exploration.

Will Maclean was born in Inverness (1941) and was a lecturer at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee, for fifteen years becoming Professor of Fine Art. He currently lives and works in Tayport, Fife.
