An Extra Spoonful

As part of our community outreach around the ‘Spoonful’ exhibition in the art galleries, we’ve been working with community groups to develop two new exhibitions in the Community Gallery.

31 May – 2 August 2025

Cantraybridge College made new work inspired by spoons within our collection, as well as exploring stories about spoons that we use in our own homes. We have had so much fun using a playful approach to the question ‘when is a spoon not a spoon?’.  Their varied responses add to our collective understanding and memories of what a spoon is!

“The spoon was made from a framework of chicken wire, we then used plaster to attach old bandages and covered it with our words. The concept behind our design is that we are quite literally spoon-fed, believing, and accepting the things we see published online, without even researching to find the truth. We spoke to our student community and asked them for words associated with negative online content, relationships, interactions, social media, and news.”  – Kelsie Beveridge
Artwork designed and produced by Kelsie Beveridge, Theo Dickson, Ria MacKay and James Price, students from Cantraybridge College in Croy, which offers training and support to young adults with learning disabilities and autism.

Lizzie Wood is a local artist and illustrator, and over several weeks, she worked on collating information based on the cultural richness and diversity of cooking, with the refugees within the Afghan Resettlement Programme as part of Highland Council’s Adult Learning ESOL classes. The resulting publication is a celebration of the spoon as a symbol for home, of family, the language of food, and the stories that people bring with them, when they settle in Scotland.
