Willie MacKay

Tunes on the Spoons

By day, William MacKay is a longstanding councillor for Wick and Caithness Ward, where he lives with his wife Glynis. What people may not know, is that Councillor MacKay also plays the spoons!

Having learnt to play the Spoons in 1968 while attending Bothy Nights and impromptu ceilidhs around Aberdeenshire at the age of 20, his spoon playing took an unexpected turn during the Covid-19 pandemic in May 2020. Offered as a gesture of gratitude for the NHS staff and key workers, his spoon playing has continued every Saturday evening, thereafter. With Glynis acting as his producer, director, editor, camera, wardrobe and lighting expert, these Saturday night spoons sessions go out on several world wide social media platforms across the UK, Europe, Canada, America, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand networks!

Now, you can hear Willie and his spoons in person, as he has very kindly agreed to perform live in our galleries, on the closing day of our Spoonful exhibition. No charge, but donations are welcome.
