Travel funding scheme that supports talented athletes is open for applications

Highland athletes that need some extra help with travel expenses are being encouraged to apply to the Athlete Travel Award Scheme (ATAS) to support them on their sporting journey!

Delivered through a partnership with sportscotland and High Life Highland, successful applicants can receive up to £750 to help with travel costs and free access to highlife facilities to allow them to focus on their fitness and strength. The scheme is aimed at performance level athletes living within the Highland area who face considerable expense getting to training and competitions, often out with the region.

ATAS has supported golfers, snowboarders, runners, surfers, gymnasts, cyclists, rowers, basketball players and many more since it was established in 2020.

High Life Highland’s Head of Sports Development Darren Reid said: “We are delighted to work in partnership with sportscotland to deliver this initiative and would encourage performance athletes living in Highland to apply. We recognise that developing as a performance athlete in the Highlands does have it challenges and hope this fund can help reduce the cost barriers in some way.

“At High Life Highland we are committed to supporting our talented athletes, ensuring they have the best possible opportunities to excel in their chosen sports at the highest levels of competition. We are very proud of all Highland athletes who represent the area and are delighted to be able to play a small part in their success.”

Previous recipients of the fund include swimmer Nebi Senguler who has just returned from competing in Geneva as part of the Scottish swimming squad as well as five-time Scottish Women’s Surfing Champion Pheobe Strachan (both from Caithness) along with cricketer Mollie Parker from Ross-shire who was recently selected for the Scotland Women’s Team.

ATAS supports travel costs for talented athletes from the Outer Hebrides, Orkney, Shetland and Highland to gain better access to competitive and developmental opportunities.

The deadline for applications is Sunday 1st March 2026. Please go Highland Athlete Travel Award Scheme – Sport for more information.
