WW1 Moss Gatherers

This year will see the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. Many Highlanders fell in the battle or died afterwards of their wounds, over 70 men from Skye and Lochalsh alone. In those far off days dressings for wounds were often still made from the traditional material of sphagnum moss. Here you can see pupils from Grantown Grammar School out collecting the moss during the war-they have obviously been very successful, as the bulging sacks show.
