Noss Primary School in Wick has achieved the highest accolade from sportscotland for their commitment to ensuring that all pupils are fully participating in sport and physical activity.
The far north school with 300 pupils has been awarded a sportscotland Gold School Sport Award for 2025-2027, recognising the school’s efforts at putting sport at the heart of their planning, practice and ethos.
The Gold Award highlights that the school has shown excellent practice across the core areas of the Award and demonstrated an on-going commitment to increase young people’s opportunities and engagement in physical education, school sport and leadership and provide clear pathways to life-long participation in sport.
Steve Hughes, Active Schools Coordinator for the Wick cluster said: “We are absolutely delighted to see Noss Primary School receive their Gold Award – their attitude to sports and being physically active is so positive so this is very well deserved.”
Noss Primary School Head Teacher, Fraser Thomson commented: “The programme has helped Noss to support and evidence continued improvement in physical education and school sport. Our staff team have taken part in training to improve skills in delivering PE using Education Scotland’s Better Movers Thinkers approach. We have also developed lower and upper school sports committees allowing pupils to be at the forefront of decision making and planning of PE and sport in school.
“As a result we have started school house table tennis, basketball and football competitions, held our first Santa Dash and recognised the immense dedication of our volunteers who lead our clubs and activities. Our netball and football teams have played in competitive matches across the county and we look forward to developing these opportunities in the coming session.
“We are incredibly well-supported by our volunteers in the form of parents, carers and staff and Tina Gibson was a huge support in her role as Active Schools Coordinator and we look forward to continuing that partnership with Steven Hughes.”
Highland Council Education Committee Chair, Cllr John Finlayson said: “Congratulations to Noss Primary School on their recent sportscotland Gold School Sport Award 2025-2027 accreditation.
“This Gold Award is a real testament to their hard work and commitment to improve physical education practices across the school. Well done to all the pupils, staff and the wider community for their dedication and I hope they celebrate and feel proud of their achievements.”
