Reading Groups

Highland Libraries supports a vibrant community of Reading Groups, which meet in libraries and private homes throughout the Highlands. Groups can access over 100 titles, with new books being added every month. High Life Highland Libraries do not have any involvement in the set-up or running of many of these groups, however we do provide information and support for Reading Groups. Please see below for some Frequently Asked Questions:

Please contact your local Highland Library for an more information about joining a reading group in your area or contact us on Tel. (01463) 251263 or Email: [email protected]

Where are the Reading Groups?
Reading Groups can meet in a Highland Library, or in a member’s home or other venue (Highland Libraries does not share details of groups in private houses or non-Council facilities). If you would like to promote your Reading Group or find existing groups in your area, contact your local library.

Can I set up my own Reading Group?
Yes you can – if you find that your nearest group is full or that there isn’t one, you can set up your own, and access the large collection of books held at the Library Support Unit in Inverness. For more information about the books available for Reading Groups, please contact us on Tel. (01463) 251263 or Email. [email protected]

What do I do next?
If you would like to use the Library Service’s books, you need to be a member of Highland Libraries.  Joining is free and easy to do – please click here for further information.  One person should be the named contact for the group (you could discuss this at your first meeting). Please contact the Library Support Unit on 01463 251263, with details of the named contact, and which library you would like to collect your books from.

How do I get books for my group?
Once your group’s details are added to our list, contact the Library Support Unit (details above) and we will arrange for the book list to be emailed to you. Because of the size of the list and the number of groups involved, it is not possible for us to post this list. Please be aware that titles are sometimes withdrawn because of age and condition, and that new titles are added regularly – the list will be kept as current as possible.

How are books chosen for the Reading Groups list?
Suggestions for new titles are welcomed from all our Reading Groups.  We email all our group contacts when new titles are added or old ones withdrawn.  We also have a Reading Group Forum made up of group members and library staff who discuss suggestions for purchase. Each set of books typically contains 8 – 10 copies. If you require an audio or large print version of a title for group members, please contact us.

What happens once the group has chosen a title?
Please contact the Library Support Unit on 01463 251263 with the title and when you would like the books.  Please be aware that titles are often booked months in advance – if we cannot supply you with the title you have asked for, we will offer you an alternative. Books are issued to groups for a 3 month period. You can return your books to the library you picked them up from.

If you have any other questions regarding Reading Groups, please contact Penny Dunbar or telephone 01463 251263. For further information on Reading Groups in general, please see External Links.
