High Life Highland Libraries offer computers with access to the Internet, electronic databases, library catalogue collections, and Microsoft Office 2010 applications including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Publisher.

Public Access Computer Network

The Public Access Computer Network is available free of charge in 40 built Highland Libraries (with the exception of Knoydart) with over 130 computers available for use for free. Charges apply for printing.

Mobile devices are welcome and you are now able to plug in your laptop or mobile device at some libraries. Please ask staff first for details before using power points.

In libraries you can do all of the following for FREE*:

  • Surf the Internet with fast broadband access
  • E-mail and social networking
  • Create Word documents, CVs, or letters
  • Access over hundreds of electronic reference resources
  • Access the online Library Catalogue
  • Download eBooks and Audiobooks
  • Download and email or print photographs from your digital camera or phone**
  • Learn the basics of using a computer
  • Organise your finances with spreadsheet and database software
  • Create presentations
  • Copy documents, photographs and pictures using scanners

Talk with library staff about the availability of specialist equipment to assist users with disabilities or visual impairment.

Reserving a Computer

Library customers with a valid library card can reserve a computer to use in any Library location. Please contact your local library for more information.

Visitors

Visitors are welcome in Highland libraries.  If you want to use a computer then you will need to show identification and complete a simple form. You will be issued with a “guest account” that will give you limited access to the PCs for that day.

Any current item from the following list as acceptable as proof of ID:

Bank Card, Family Credit Book, Rent Book, Valid driving licence, Council Tax payment book, Job Seekers Allowance book, Bank Statement, Building Society pass book, Utilities bill, Valid passport, Valid student card, National Entitlement Card, Young Scot Card,  High Life Card
