Letter from General George Wade to John Cameron of Lochiel, 1 September 1725

General George Wade (1673-1740), today best known as the builder of the military roads in the Highlands, was Commander in Chief of the military forces in Scotland from 1724 to 1740. One of his main concerns was to pacify the Highlands, and as part of this plan, he tried to disarm the various clans, so that there could be no repetition of the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1719.

This letter was written by Wade to John Cameron of Lochiel, 18th Chief of Clan Cameron, calling upon him and his clan to surrender their arms at Fort William, as the Mackenzies had already done at Castle Brahan.
