Today for the #ArchiveAdventCalendar the theme is Presents. We have a letter from John Cameron to Charles Stuart Esqr. , Ballachulish dated 16th March 1814. It reads:
‘… I have sent you by the Bearer the powder Horn that my Great Grand-Father had at the Battle of Kellichraky and who was killed at the siege of Dunkeld. He was Alexr. Stewart Brother to the tutor of Appin and so to Ardsheal. Altho it is of little value it is still worth keeping in memory of those that had it, and for antiquity sake, besides that it is a piece of dress, or ornament, if I may call it so, that a Highlander was never compleet without it.’
This letter is part of the West Highland Museum Collection.

Today the #ExploreYourArchive theme is Wild Archives. We have a letter to Cameron of Lochiel, dated 06th January 1882, describing a storm at Achnacarry and Loch Arkaig (CL/A/3/2/66). It reads:
‘… We have had another extraordinary storm to day. It began in the morning and has continued the whole day. The wildest time was between 12 and 2 o’ clock.’
The letter continues: ‘ … although I was in a completely sheltered place when strong gusts came I had two or three times to lie flat on the ground until they had spent themselves.
Loch Arkaig was in a perfect tempest; the spray rising off the loch in great clouds and preventing us seeing the Craignish side, the waves and spray dashing over the large bridge and the new wall in the wildest manner conceivable making it quite impossible for anyone to thinking of crossing.’

Today the #ExploreYourArchive theme is Mysterious Archives. We have an entry by PC McGruer from the Glenfinnan Police Daily Occurrence Book dated 08th December 1898. It reads:
‘… when near Fassifern found a horse and cart property of N. B. Railway crosswise on the public road … and the driver lying helplessly drunk on the road. I took charge of the horse taking the driver along with me.’
It transpired that a whisky cask on the cart, which was bound for Glenfinnan Hotel, had been ‘holed’. The hole had been plugged but the whisky was still leaking out. The driver was searched by PC McGruer and he had in his possession a gimlet (which he used to make the hole in the cask) and ‘… a pint bottle of whisky which was in the coat.’ (R91/D/C/5/12/1)
