‘Memorial given to the Bp. of Rochester by Sir Hector MacLean and Lochiel. Dated at Paris 28th May 1725

Sir Hector MacLean and Lochiel being asked by the Bishop of Rochester what they thought might be of use to the King’s better Information in the present situation of the Highlands; whereby he may the more easily take measures how to prevent their ruin; they have giv’n their thoughts as follows:

We beg to represent to the King that nothing less than the ruin of our Country and of his Majesty’s cause in Scotland is intended at present by the Government in England and that both these Considerations are so dear to us that we cannot hesitate a moment to resolve to sacrifice our lives in order to prevent it. We doubt not but his Majesty as soon as orders can arrive will give us all the assistance he can in point of Arms, Ammunition, Officers, money and dry provisions, such as Biskett, Brandy &c’.
