Winners of Inver’s first of six Winter Series Cross Country race announced

Active Schools Co-ordinators from across East Ross and East Sutherland hosted the first of six Cross Country races at Inver Primary School on Tuesday 7th November.

Around 140 pupils attended the event, with ages ranging from P4 to P7.

The route was around the football field and along the shoreline, then back towards the school through a finishing funnel.

The boys were first to complete the approximately 1.6km course, with first place going to Rory Mellon from Dingwall Primary School.

Then the girls set off on the same course, with first place going to Lottie Muir from Craighill primary School.

The first 10 runners from each race were awarded with a medal as they crossed the finishing line.

Julie Cleghorn, High Life Highland’s Active Schools Co-ordinator who organised the Inver event, said: “The Ross-shire Active Schools Cross Country series is a very successful event and participation has grown massively over the years.

“We started with 45 pupils and now we regularly have up to 200 pupils at one event!

“These set of races are organised as a training opportunity for pupils involved in the Ross Primary Schools Sports Association (RPSSA) Cross Country event.

“It additionally provides the opportunity for pupils who do not currently take part in the area event to run and represent their school in a local event.”

Elissa Stevenson, High Life Highland’s Active Schools Coordinator for the Dornoch cluster, concluded: “While these events are only open to parents and guardians of participating pupils, it’s so important that awareness is raised for Active Schools and the activity they have across the Highlands.

“We want to be able to recognise the runners at these events for giving it their all, while also promoting the core aims of Active Schools: more children, more active, more often.”
