High Life Highland Libraries celebrate this year’s success of popular ‘School’s Out’ program

High Life Highland’s Libraries in and around Inverness are delighted with the success of their Summer 2023 School’s Out Programme.

Through the course of the six-week school holiday, the High Life Highland Libraries Teams across the Highlands area have put on a large and varied family-friendly programme of activities for highlife Members in the area.

The ‘School’s Out Programme’ also gave families the opportunity to participate in a wide range of free-of-charge sessions including: arts and crafts, storytimes, puppet shows, games nights, den building, and of course the usual ever-popular Lego Club and Bookbug sessions.

The annual ‘Reading Agency Summer Reading Challenge’ is a key part of High Life Highland Libraries’ summer offering, and is a great way to keep children engaged in reading over the long school break.

Library user, Kathryn O’Donoghue, shared: “My 6-year-old and I love going to the Library. As an English teacher in Secondary School, I know how important it is to have access to a wide range of texts, and our local Library has helped me make sure we are reading every day.

“We loved this year’s ‘Summer Reading Challenge’ and the fun that it encouraged. The library is without a doubt one of our favourite places to spend time together.”

Families are reminded there is still time to finish off the ‘Summer Reading Challenge’ and collect their medal and certificate from the Library if they have not yet done so.

Working with partners in Archives, Museums and Ranger services, High Life Highland Libraries also contributed to hugely successful activities combining history, nature walks, storytelling, origami and craft.

Meg Davidson, High Life Highland’s Network Librarian, added: “It has been wonderful to see so many children and families enjoying the Library services over the school holidays, and it has equally been such an honour and pleasure to work with such talented, imaginative, and dedicated colleagues.

“A special mention goes to the High Life Highland’s Young Leaders embarking on the Leadership programme, who have volunteered their time to help at the many Library events over the summer.

“We have really benefited from working closely together with our High Life Highland colleagues across Museums, Archives, and the Ranger services, as it has allowed us to pool our resources, skills and expertise to bring an even wider choice of events to the local community.”

Steve Walsh, High Life Highland’s Chief Executive, concluded: “High Life Highland staff have come together to put on an accessible and varied programme this year, which I am delighted to see has been popular among highlife Members Highland-wide.

“High Life Highland’s inspiring teams are planning an incredible cross-service line-up for the upcoming Autumn and Winter school holiday periods, so head to the High Life Highland website for more details.”

High Life Highland Libraries are planning another exciting roster of family-friendly events, which will include the October holidays and ‘Book Week Scotland’ in November.
