WINTER

Lar MacGregor

Artist Lar MacGregor looks back at some Celtic roots of the festive season and the Winter Solstice.  Although her name can be found throughout Scotland in folklore, customs, ancient monuments and the natural landscape, the Cailleach Beira, sometimes called the Winter Goddess, is one of the lesser-known figures of Celtic mythology, and is often overlooked.  Her true origins have been lost in the mists of time and she is ancient beyond imagining, predating even the Celtic mythology of which she has become a part.   The artist uses only single use plastics, left over crafting materials, packaging and rescued timber from the wood pile, from which a story emerges that explores traditional and more contemporary ways of experiencing Winter.
