Gifts for a Jacobite Prince

A highlight tour organised by National Museums Scotland

7th March – 20th May 2017, Museum First Floor Gallery

Targe (2)Touring in advance of the opening of a major exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland, these are not weapons of war but symbols of power and status. The sword and the targe, or Highland shield, were probably gifted to Prince Charles Edward Stuart, by James, 3rd Duke of Perth, a committed supporter of the Jacobite cause. Discovered after the battle of Culloden, the targe was recovered by a Jacobite clan chief, while tradition states that the sword was found by government troops and presented to their Commander, the Duke of Cumberland.
