Joshua Reynolds & Thomas Gainsborough

Admiral Sir George Bowyer (3)This exhibition originates a private Highland collection and features three paintings from Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723 – 1792); an influential eighteenth-century English painter, specialising in portraits including Admiral Sir George Bowyer (pictured). He promoted the “Grand Style” in painting which depended on idealisation of the imperfect. The exhibition also includes a Thomas Gainsborough (1727 – 1788) portrait of Thomas Charles 6th Viscount Tracy from the same period. Gainsborough went on to surpassed his rival Reynolds to become the dominant British portraitist of the second half of the 18th century.
