Moving beyond the Frontier

The impact of the Roman Iron Age in the Inner Moray Firth

CAITDay Conference at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery,

Friday 9 October 2015,   11am – 4pm,

We are delighted to invite you to book for this special one-day conference, which will celebrate the opening of our ‘Art in OUR Hands: Treasures from beyond the Frontier’ exhibition in the Ground Floor Gallery of the museum.

Throughout the day we will explore our growing understanding of the impact of the Roman Empire, beyond the Frontier, into the Inner Moray Firth, as evidenced in recent archaeological findings at locations including Auldearn, Belladrum, Culduthel, Dornoch, Stoneyfield and Seafield West.

Dr Fraser Hunter, Principal Curator of the Iron Age at the National Museums of Scotland and contributor to this project, will be our keynote speaker.   He will consider how objects in the IMAG collections reveal complex and sophisticated relationships between the Roman Empire and the Iron Age people of the Inner Moray Firth area.

Dr Alex Woolf, from the University of St Andrews, will also join us to present his research establishing Pictish Fortriu as a kingdom in the north and to explore how the development of this mid-First Millennium AD power centre might have been influenced by a ‘Highland’ response to Rome.

The conference includes an opportunity to hear about the programme of research, conservation and interpretation that has enabled us to exhibit collections never before exhibited and to hear from the volunteer community curators who have helped us with this process.

Those joining us for the day will also be among the first to see the newly refurbished cases and the new display panel especially commissioned for this project.

The refurbishment of our Late Prehistoric Gallery and this special one-day conference has been funded by the Art Fund.  Penny Bull, Programmes Manager for Art Fund UK will be joining us for the day and will speak on the work of the Art Fund and the Treasures Plus Programme in particular.

One not to miss!  £7.00 / Concession for Art Fund Members.  Booking is essential.  Book now in person at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery, call 01463 237114 or email Cait
