The summer holidays are upon us! As part of High Life Highland’s School’s Out programme, the Highland Archive Centre is running three children’s activities over the holidays – Castles, Battles and Prisoners, Story Dice and Young History Detectives.
Castles, Battles and Prisoners – Thursday 12th July, 10am – 12pm, ages 8 – 13
The Highland Archive Centre holds millions of documents dating from the 1200s to the present day. Many contain stories of battles, castles, prisons & prisoners. Come and handle some old documents and find out:
– What it was like to be the hangman in Inverness in 1730
– Why Hugh MacLeod’s body was taken away to Edinburgh for dissection in 1835
– What the prison sentence was for wearing a kilt after the Battle of Culloden
– What happened when Inverness Castle was blown up in 1746!
Young History Detectives – 27th July, 10am – 12pm, ages 10 – 15
The Highland Archive Centre holds millions of historic documents, dating from the 1200s to the present day. Come and learn about how we use these documents, and the detective skills needed to work in an archive. Bring along information about your parents and grandparents to learn how to start your family tree!
Story Dice – Friday 3rd August, 10am – 12pm, ages 7 – 11
The Highland Archive Centre holds millions of historic documents, dating from the 1200s to the present day. Come and find out about some of the amazing people and stories hidden in our documents (from soldiers to dancers, Jacobites to schoolboys) then use these real-life stories to create new tales of heroes and villains using story dice!
