Mabel Love, actress (1874-1953)

Can you help us? What is the connection between actress Mabel Love and the Highlands?

This signed postcard is of Mabel Love (1874-1953) dancer and stage actress of the late Victorian and Edwardian era. She appeared at Covent Garden as a solo dancer in various operatic ballets and also in numerous plays, pantomimes and musical comedies. She starred with famous names of the time such as Lewis Waller and Robert Loraine in London, Paris and New York. Mabel was famous for her beauty and lived in London, Brighton and Weybridge. She retired from the stage to raise her daughter, Mary Watson, and to run dance school in Knightsbridge. In 1948, Mary married B.O.A.C. Captain A.C. Loraine.

The postcard dates from c.1903. It is one of dozens of commercially produced postcards that we have of Mabel. We also hold hundreds of letters that she received. There is, however, a mystery. How did the Mabel Love archive find its way into the possession of a solicitors firm in Dingwall prior to being deposited at the Highland Archive Centre? What is the connection between Mabel or her daughter Mary and the Highlands?

If you can shed any light on a possible connection, please contact us on tel: 01463 256444 or email: [email protected].
