Inverness Burgh Minutes, 1702-1720

The minutes of Inverness Burgh Town Council provide fascinating detail of events taking place in Inverness during the Jacobite uprising of 1715.  A letter to the council from Hugh Rose of Kilravock, John Forbes of Culloden and Duncan Forbes in November of that year accuses the magistrates of allowing Inverness Castle to be taken over by a rebel garrison.  They call the magistrates “comforters of rebellion and traitors”, showing the high level of tension existing at the time.

Writing Ideas

Inverness was in chaos in 1715.  The castle was taken over by an army of Jacobites, things were stolen from local people and businesses and the whole town was divided by the cause.   Write a short story from the point of view of a participant or witness.
