Engagement at HARC in 2019…

During 2019 at HARC we have run lots of events, group visits, school events, classes and more, as well as our normal public service. In 2019 we have run –

  • 10 sets of classes – Archives for Beginners and Family History for Beginners Classes run twice a year every year at HARC but we also do classes outwith the Centre as part of the HLH YouTime programme across the Highland
  • 3 School’s Out events – these events are for school age during the summer holidays
  • 17 activities with local schools – we welcome school groups to HARC regularly, usually giving the pupils a tour of the facility and a display of documents relevant to what they are studying. We also include at least one activity during the visit to help the pupils engage with the documents and see how they can be used. We also visit schools to give talks.
  • 83 Community Events – these include group visits to the Centre for many different types of groups – this year some of the groups we have welcomed to HARC include Dementia groups, mental health groups, groups of retired people, local and family history groups, genealogy tour groups, university and college groups and many more! As part of our Community engagement, staff also go out to give talks to groups or at events and we have also engage with groups over several sessions as part of a planned programme such as with ESOL and Inverness Prison learners. Staff have also attended outside events to give information on the Archive Service such as at the Inverness Highland Games, Moy Game Fair, Clan Gatherings and UHI Fresher’s Fayre. We also put on events for the wider public at HARC where we showcase some of our holdings through subject-specific exhibitions.

Our public engagement work is very important to us and we love working with so many different people throughout the year. If you think you or a group you know would benefit from working with any of the four Highland Archive Centres, please get in touch with any of the Centres directly or our Community Engagement Officer – you can find contact details for all the Centres on the website.
