Constance Mackenzie

Extract from scrapbook kept by Mary Gwendoline Mackenzie/Davidson,
1883-1909

Within the incredible scrapbook of Mary Gwendoline Mackenzie (wife of Duncan Davidson of Tulloch) lies the story of the unconventional Lady Constance Mackenzie.  Lady Constance, the second daughter of the Earl ofCromartie, flouted convention all her life.  Prior to her marriage in 1904 (detailed in this article) she travelled round the world in men’s clothes, was an expert horsewoman, a crack shot and a excellent swimmer (amongst other skills!).  Her marriage in Tain (to Sir Edward Stewart-Richardson) took place in near secrecy.  Guests were invited at the last minute by telegraph (including Duncan Davidson who gave her away).  None of her own family attended the wedding, believing her still engaged to someone else! Lady Constance’s husband died 1914.  She went on to marry a second time and lead a scantily-clad dance troupe round the world – much to society’s disapproval!  Lady Constance died in 1932.

Writing Ideas

Constance lived a very unusual life for a lady at the start of the 20th century.  Do you think she was brave?  Write about her life from her perspective – why did she want to be different from other people?

Imagine you are a member of Highland society and have heard all about Constance’s unusual life.  Write a diary entry with your thoughts about her and her adventures.
