William B Wallace Collection at North Coast Visitor Centre

A colourful exhibition by Caithness artist William Wallace is on show at the newly opened North Coast Visitor Centre (NCVC).

Willie was brought up on the Western Isles and graduated with a BA Hons in fine art, drawing and painting, from Gray’s School of Art in 1990.

A part-time art teacher at Thurso High School, he said: “Lately I have been exploring compositions based on artworks that I like, focussing firstly on flat and slightly raised shapes and creating my own narrative on that premise.

“These new works include figurative and landscape images as well as still life and often feature bold areas of colour or texture.”

Willie was tutored at college by respected artists William Connon, Sandy Fraser and Joyce W Cairns and was influenced by the works of William Gillies, William Littlejohn, The Scottish Colourists and Cubism.

His work up until now has primarily focussed on still life painting in oils, with themes involving subtle varying viewpoints, distorted perspectives, and conflicting spatial relationships between objects.

He works in a variety of media – plaster, card, resin and inks, often including found objects, but his first love is painting in oils.

Recently, Willie has been creating large figurative paintings, including one commemorating the Iolaire tragedy, which is currently on loan to Lews Castle in Stornoway. He has work in private collections across the UK.

High Life Highland Exhibitions Officer Cathy Shankland said: “The exhibition is well worth a visit and is a great place to spend some time with your Christmas visitors or to take time out from the Christmas shopping – and don’t forget to drop in at the NCVC shop and café while you are there.”

The exhibition runs at the High Life Highland venue until January 8.
