Successful winter cross country series for Ross-shire and East Sutherland schools

The Active Schools Winter Cross Country Series returned to the Highland area in late 2022 kicking off with Inver in November 2022, followed by meets in Alness, Dingwall and Invergordon. The final event in the series took place in Dornoch on 7 February 2023. A total of 15 schools from across Ross-Shire and East Sutherland attended the final meet this month.

The Winter Series provides an excellent opportunity for pupils from 23 primary schools, aged from primary 4 to primary 7, to compete on a variety of routes and in a range of locations. This year was particularly special due to it being the return to in person events following the break in competitions during the pandemic.

Elissa Stevenson, High Life Highland Active Schools Coordinator for Dornoch, said:

“It was wonderful to see all the pupils eager to do well and enjoy taking part in the races.  A total of 108 girls and 130 boys took part in the series across 23 primary schools, which was a fantastic turnout.”

In each race, the first 10 boys and 10 girls were awarded individual medals and all results were collated across the whole series.  At the final race, placings for the top three boys and three girls were awarded. The results were as follows:

Boys

1st: Robbie Welsh, Kiltearn Primary School

2nd: Kyle Connolly, Inver Primary School

3rd: Rory Mellon, Dingwall Primary School

Girls

1st: Lottie Muir, Craighill Primary School

2nd: Jessica Fredricks, Dingwall Primary School

3rd: Charlotte Fleming, Dornoch Primary School
